Application forms are the most common method used by employers to recruit new staff. An application form is a document, filled in by applicants for a particular job that enables the employer to compare and contrast the candidates. In case of govt sector recruitments, the job applications are in prescribed formats and therefore, no special skill is required to fill up the applications. However, in case of Private Sector jobs, the job application in the form of your resume is of outmost importance. Often it makes the difference whether you are even considered for a job interview. Ten must DOs for preparation job resumes | Sl No | MUST DOS | Explanations | | 1 | Read the job advertisement and forms very carefully before preparing your resume | You only get one chance to make a good first impression. So if you are serious about wanting the job, commit yourself to putting in the best application you can. Time spent making the resume look presentable may give you an advantage when the shortlist for interview is being considered | | 2 | Use good quality A4 size paper unless specified otherwise | It is common practice to use A4 size papers in most of the organisation | | 3 | Use a computer or type your resume neatly | Computer / typing should be the preferred for neat presentation. Avoid too many fonts and styles which will be very annoying | | 4 | Write in capital letters if your form is hand written | For legibility, it should be your practice to fill the form in capital letters only. | | 5 | Check the particulars thoroughly for accuracy and completeness of particulars and Check the spelling | It has been observed that candidates often forget to complete the form due to oversight. Misspelled resumes give very bad impression to the interviewer | | 6 | Don't scribble out mistakes, instead prepare a fresh resume | Scribbled resume creates bad impression on the mind of the interviewer | | 7 | In the chronology of events, mention the recent one first and older one at the last | While giving the list of educational qualifications, experience etc, the latest one should be given first not the other way round | | 8 | Chose appropriate words for mentioning your good points | While describing about yourself, chose the words very carefully as you may have to explain the same with examples later on in the interview. Use positive sounding words, such as - flexible, calm, punctual, practical, dedicated, creative, confident, innovative, careful, dependable, friendly, reliable, cooperative, loyal, responsible, hardworking, committed, decisive, patient, honest, etc. | | 9 | Chose appropriate words for mentioning your experience | While describing about your experience, chose the words very carefully so as to convey your experience in a more concise and positive way. Words such as Coordinating, managing, training, teaching, advising, selling, supervising, etc may be used | | 10 | Keep the covering letter short and punchy | Nobody reads a lengthy covering letter.
