Must DOs
Explanations
1
Know yourself
Only you can recognise your most valuable strengths and most hurtful weaknesses. Be clear about yourself, your hobbies etc. Write down the same and memorise.
2
Know the organisation
Find out before hand the organisation's products and services, annual sales, structure and other key information from various sources. It will prove that you are interested in working for the prospective employer by demonstrating knowledge about the organisation.
3
Reach the venue well before time
Always keep sufficient margin for any interview. All your preparation will be waste if you don’t reach the venue before time, as late arrival will definitely increase anxiety.
4
Dress properly
You make your greatest impact on the interviewer in the first 15 seconds. Dress right in subdued colours, little jewellery (women), polished shoes, everything neat and clean. Hygiene includes combed hair, deodorant or low key perfume. Mouth wash or oral spray is highly recommended as many interviewers find bad breath a huge put off.
5
Switch off the Cell Phone
Make sure your phone is off prior to the interview. Nothing is more rude or disrespectful to an interviewer than listening to another ring.
6
Don't look at your watch during the interview
Be careful not to glance at your watch or the wall clock in the middle of your interview.
7
Greet the members on entering the room
Don't forget to greet the interviewer or to take permission to sit down.
8
Don't forget to close the door after entering
It has been seen often that due to inexperience or nervousness, candidates forget to close the door behind them while entering the room prompting the member to request the candidate to close the door.
9
Say 'thank you' at the end of the interview
Say thanks to the members of the interview board in such a way that it should not look like only one member has been thanked.
10
Look at the interviewer when conversing
Look at the interviewer in the eye and smile but don’t be too loud. Maintain good eye contact while avoiding a fixed stare.
11
Take 10 seconds pause before answering
Focus on the question being asked and don't try to anticipate the next one. Take a small pause before answering the question, don’t jump into answering even if know the answer.
12
Don't condemn or talk ill about your past employer
Don't say a single bad word whatever may be provocation against your present employer or former employer or the competition.
13
Don't express extreme views
Be tactful whenever any opinion related questions are asked. Try not to take side or give extreme black and white kind of answer.
14
Don't tell other job offers at hand
It can be disastrous to tell about your already job offers if any. They may see you as someone who already has a job.
15
Be decisive
In case situational question is asked, don’t hesitate to give decisive answer. Interviewer would not judge where your decision in a particular situation is right or wrong, the attribute being watched is your decisiveness on a particular situation.
16
Market Yourself
Don't let modesty prevent you from telling the interviewer about yourself, what you have done and the value of what you can do. Know yourself, what you are good at and be comfortable and articulate talking about that.
17
Avoid 'Yes' or 'No' type answer
Practice talking to people about yourself and what you can do. Many of candidates can say little more than 'Yes' or 'No', which creates bad impression in the interview situation. Most of the answers should be at least one full sentence.
18
Don't sit on the edge of the chair
Sit comfortably on an upright position in the chair. It has been seen that many of the candidates sit on the edge of the chair, which gives impression of anxiety and nervousness
19
Understand the question
If you are not sure you have understood the question or you are not sure you have heard it properly, it is perfectly alright to ask the interviewer to repeat or rephrase it. It is much better to do that than to give irrelevant answer.
20
Practice all the above tips at least five times before you face any interview
Any interview tips are effective only if practiced and rehearsed. Don't be under illusion that by reading and remembering these or any other tips will help you unless you practice it before hand.
